It has been an adage that teams are at their most vulnerable when they are attacking Liverpool. It seems to defy logic but the Reds’ ability to hit teams on the counter makes it more likely that it will be the Reds that score off an opposition attack.
One such moment was on display in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Southampton
yesterday. The Reds played the ball out from the back with ease and cut through Southampton’s high press in a series of well-orchestrated moves to make sure the ball ended up in the Saints’ net.It was a perfect illustration of the flamboyant, free-flowing team game that the Reds have come to epitomize under Jurgen Klopp. Unfortunately for the Reds, Mohamad Salah had strayed just offside in the buildup and the goal was rightly chalked off for offside.
The goal would have been a part of several highlight reels, had it stood. It was reminiscent of the fantastic team goal scored by Liverpool in the 2-1 loss to Manchester City away at the Etihad last season.
Thankfully, Salah and co. didn’t let the disappointment get to them as they went on to smash three more goals past the Saints, with the Egyptian netting a brace. The win puts the Reds 22 points ahead of Manchester City, who lost to Tottenham Hotspur today.
Liverpool fans were amazed by the goal and many took to Twitter to express their disappointment at the goal being chalked off.
