Mohamed Salah to be included in Egypt squad for Summer Olympics
Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah is set to miss both the pre-season and the beginning of Liverpool’s 2020-2021 campaign. The 27-year-old is set to be included in Egypt’s squad for the Summer Olympics to be held in Tokyo. (h/t Mail Online)
Competition rules permit only three players over the age of 23 to be included in a nation’s squad. Egypt Under-23s boss Shawky Gharib has confirmed that Salah will be one of the players.
The men’s tournament is scheduled to run from July 24 to August 9. With the Premier League season set to start to August 9, Jurgen Klopp will be forced to begin the season without his talismanic attacker.
The news will come as a setback to Klopp, who will have to release the Egyptian once again in January 2021 for the Africa Cup of Nations. Liverpool are also likely to lose Sadio Mane and Naby Keita. (h/t Guardian)
Gharib went on to explain the rationale by calling Salah among the top three players in the world (h/t Guardian). Although there is no argument on that point, the Liverpool hierarchy will be less than pleased.
