The Independent’s Melissa Reddy has provided an update on Timo Werner’s situation. She has confirmed that Jurgen Klopp is an admirer of the player but the club has not yet entered negotiations with RB Leipzig. (h/t Independent)
The 23-year-old meets the criteria of players looked for by the recruitment team. However, he will have to play a backup role to Firmino before stepping up.
Liverpool’s front three of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino practically pick themselves when fully fit. Werner’s signing is unlikely to change that, at least not off the bat.
Reddy went on to state that Liverpool will look to pursue a deal for the German only if he is ready to play an important role for the team, but not necessarily a core one.
“The right signing also needs to be a patient one.”
Although Liverpool will be without Mane and Salah during the AFCON, the club is unwilling to sanction a long-term signing for a short-term problem.
The article also touched upon the German’s supposed buyout. The Reds consider the valuation of less than £50million to be a good return in an inflated transfer market.
