Hamann urges Timo Werner to reject Liverpool transfer

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann has urged compatriot Timo Werner to reject a move to the Reds this summer.

Writing in his column on Sky Germany (h/t Express), the former German international believes that the 23-year-old should join Manchester United or Chelsea instead.

Werner has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool this summer. His release clause worth around £50million is said to expire in April. The striker recently expressed his pride at being linked with a move to the Merseyside club.

Hamann is honoured to have the player linked with his former club, but he believes that Werner will get more game time at Chelsea or United.

He praised the Leipzig star for his continued improvement and believes he will move to a big team soon.

“I trust him to play in a very big team soon. It is of course an honour for him to be linked to Liverpool.”

The 46-year-old rates the player’s speed as his biggest weapon and believes he is at his strongest when he plays through the middle. Liverpool already have Roberto Firmino playing as centre-forward and he is connecting well with his teammates.

With the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah out wide, Werner’s chances of breaking into the starting eleven will be severely restricted. Although it would be a step down from Liverpool, the striker will not have any problems breaking into United or Chelsea’s line-ups.

“Liverpool is the absolute benchmark, but in my view he would be better suited to Manchester United or Chelsea.”
