Xherdan Shaqiri is expected to leave Liverpool in the summer
According to the Liverpool Echo, Swiss winger Xherdan Shaqiri will Leave Liverpool in the summer. The 28-year-old enjoyed an impressive debut season at Anfield racking up six goals and five assists in 30 games.
He came off the bench for a number of cameos including a match-winning brace against Manchester United in 2018. His run of form was such that Klopp even tweaked his preferred 4-3-3 to a 4-2-3-1 in order to accommodate the Swiss international.
Today, Shaqiri is akin to a forgotten man at Anfield and has made 10 appearances this season. His solitary goal came in the 5-2 demolition of Everton, which coincidentally was also his only start.
Shaqiri has played just nine of the club’s last 38 Premier League games, starting just two of them. He has played an astonishingly low 216 minutes in the League last year.
Injuries the prime culprit
Injuries have played a major part in the midfielder’s absence. He picked up a calf injury in the preseason before suffering a repeat of it before the Carabao Cup and Champions League fixtures in September.
December was a fruitful month for Shaqiri as he made three appearances in the Premier League and two in the Club World Cup. He then picked up an injury prior to the home clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers and has played just one minute since.
With no update on his current fitness, he is likely to miss more games in the coming months. The Reds have not missed him as the team has gone on to take an incredible 110 points out of a possible 114 in his absence.
Roma and Sevilla were keen on the player in the January window, However, Klopp blocked all senior departures until the summer.
