Liverpool could be awarded Premier League title even if season is cut short due to coronavirus scare

Liverpool could yet be crowned Premier League champions

According to the Telegraph, Liverpool could be crowned Premier League champions amidst the coronavirus scare that has threatened to cut short the season.

The Premier League season still has nine more matchdays to go. Doubts have been raised as to whether it can be completed following the uncertainty caused by the pandemic. The football season across Europe has been brought to a standstill. The Premier League is unlikely to restart before April 4. This threatens to be the longest suspension of the game post World War II

There is no mechanism in place to deal with a scenario if the current season is cut short. According to the report, a senior club executive revealed on Friday night that there was little opposition to awarding Jurgen Klopp’s men the title.

Liverpool’s extravagant 25-point lead means they can guarantee the title with just six more points once the season resumes. With the Reds so far ahead, their rivals are willing to concede the title to the Merseysiders.

An uncertain future

There is no guarantee that the season will resume in April as the disease is expected to peak until May or June. The Premier League had earlier suggested that the matches this week would go ahead. However, they reversed the decision after seven clubs put their players in isolation.

This summer’s European Championships could be put off, hence clearing the calendar for the leagues to finish their quota of games. With the World Cup to be held in Qatar in 2022, some figures have also called for the calendar to be redrawn to dovetail with the spectacle.

Any decision taken now is liable to find both supporters and opposition. The fate of a number of clubs is up in the air, making it a hard call to make.
