Diego Maradona heaps praise on Liverpool and Klopp
Diego Maradona is one of football’s greatest players. He has won a wide array of trophies at both individual and collective capacities. Now it looks like he has added another feather to his cap, one we would argue to be one of the biggest – being a Liverpool fan.
According to the Daily Star, the Argentine legend claims to have become a fan of the Reds following the club’s miraculous Champions League victory against AC Milan in 2005.
Liverpool came back from three goals down to clinch the unlikeliest of victories. The comeback is now steeped in both Liverpool and European football folklore. It also convinced Maradona that miracles were possible.
“I’ve now made Liverpool my English team. They showed that football is the most beautiful sport of all”
Not only did we win our fifth European crown that night, but also the allegiance of one of football’s biggest names.
He also praised the Liverpool fans who outnumbered the Milan fans that night by a considerable margin. Maradona never played against the Reds at Anfield, but he did witness the club in action when we took on Lille in the Europa League in 2010.
The Argentine has now professed his admiration for Reds boss Jurgen Klopp. Maradona has named the charismatic German tactician as his favourite manager.
“I love what he conveys, the type that gives me confidence”
Klopp has experienced success at both Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool. This has not been lost on Maradona, who labelled the German a forward-thinking manager.
The German has changed the club’s fortunes since taking over in 2015. He has made us Champions League regulars while also winning us our sixth European crown. He followed up the success with the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup this season and is also likely to end pour long league drought this season.
