Jurgen Klopp open to selling Liverpool star following high-profile blunders

Jurgen Klopp open to selling Spanish shot-stopper Adrian

According to the Evening Standard (h/t Daily Star), Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is not keen on selling reserve keeper Adrian at the end of the season. The German will, however, not stand in the Spaniard’s way if an offer is made.

The 33-year-old was signed for free last summer and replaced Simon Mignolet as Alisson Becker’s understudy. An injury to the Brazilian ace thrust Adrian into the starting line-up for a few games.

He made a dream debut in Europe as Liverpool lifted the UEFA Super Cup after defeating Chelsea on penalties. Adrian was the hero on the night as he saved the decisive spot-kick from Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham.

He continued to perform admirably and even pulled off what could be called the save of the season against Napoli in the UEFA Champions League.

Adrian was the hero in the UEFA Super Cup

The Spaniard is no Alisson but is a more than capable understudy who can do a decent job.

His stock has somewhat taken a beating following a couple of high-profile errors against Chelsea and Atletico Madrid recently. The Reds looked to have turned the tie against the Spanish giants only for Adrian’s howler to hand the initiative back to Diego Simeone’s side.

The errors cost Liverpool a place in the quarter-finals and ruined what was an incredibly dominating performance on the night.

Adrian has lost just three of 18 games as a Liverpool player in the starting XI

It looks like the decision on his future could be made depending on the nature of the offer and the keeper’s wish. Loris Karius is set to return to Liverpool in the summer, adding another layer to the goalkeeping saga.

Adrian has more than proven his worth as a backup keeper. His mistake against Atletico should be condemned but not at the cost of downplaying the crucial saves he has made.

It is fair to say Alisson’s early-season injury could have proved significant had the Spanish understudy not stepped up. It should not be forgotten that Liverpool has lost just three of the 18 games he has played. Two of them have come last month, but it should not tarnish what has been an impressive season.
