Man Utd commit to finishing current season boosting Liverpool title charge
Adversity brings together the best of foes. It appears to be the case at the moment as arch-rivals Manchester United’s latest move could come as a huge boost to Liverpool’s title chances.
The Reds are currently 25 points clear of their nearest rivals. With just nine more games to go, Liverpool need just six more points to win their first title in thirty years.
However, given the coronavirus pandemic, the league is currently suspended amidst calls from some quarters to declare the current season null and void.
The Red Devils have published a statement declaring their complete commitment in ensuring the current season is finished both domestically and in Europe. (h/t Liverpool Echo)
Declaring the season void will be a cruel blow to what has been an extraordinary effort from Jurgen Klopp’s team. It is heartening to see our biggest rivals toe a line that suits us just fine.
United managing director Richard Arnold opened up on the issue and thanked the Manchester United Supporters Trust and fan representatives for their patience. He further went on to stress on the gravity of the situation before reiterating support to the fans’ grievances for their loyal following.
Former United star and current Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce too has expressed his hope that the current season is completed.
A double-edged sword
A decision to scrap the season is likely to hit United as much as Liverpool. The Red Devils are well and truly alive in the race for top four and have one foot in the last eight of the Europa League.
The club could very well be throwing away a shot at a return to the Champions League if the season is voided. Another season without a spot at Europe’s premier competition will be unthinkable for a side that has dominated English football in the past.
Continuing the season is likely to benefit them as much as us. Although we may win the title, a return to the Champions League will help Ole Gunnar Solksjaer in his United rebuild.

United have as much to lose as us if the season is voided. Although dealing with the coronavirus pandemic remains the current priority, it makes sense to finish the current season when possible before starting the next one. At least in this aspect, Liverpool don’t’ walk alone.
