CIES predicts a drop in Liverpool squad value if season is declared void

With the coronavirus pandemic spreading across the world, it isn’t just the suspension of matches that has affected the beautiful game. Matters off the field will also go for a toss of CIES’s latest predictions come to pass.

According to the Centre for Sports Studies Football Observatory (CIES), a player’s value could experience a sharp drop if no football is played until the end of June. Liverpool is no exception and occupied the top spot in the rankings announced a fortnight ago.

The Reds were valued at a whopping €1.405billion at the head of the pile. According to the CIES algorithm, the value of our squad could plummet to €1.052billion. A significant drop of 25.1%. Liverpool will still, however, retain the first spot.

If the prediction does come to pass, Jurgen Klopp’s side will be the only side in Europe still worth more than a billion. A distinction earlier shared with five other teams.

According to the report, the extent of the decrease varies according to a number of factors such as the players’ age, contract duration, career path, and recent performance.

The greatest loss is observed in ageing footballers with short-term contracts who played fewer matches during the current season than in the previous campaign.

We currently have Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne in the last few months of their contract. The Likes of Alisson Becker, Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip have played fewer games due to injury.

No team is immune

The biggest losers will be defending Premier League champions Manchester City whose value will drop by €412million. A decrease of 30.3%. The Cityzens will still cling on to the second spot in the list, just behind us.

The other English teams in the top 10 include Chelsea in fourth, Manchester United in fifth and Tottenham Hotspur in tenth. Merseyside rivals Everton occupy the 18th spot and are behind Leicester City and Arsenal.

The greatest potential percentage loss was observed for Olympique de Marseille with 38%. Conversely, the lowest change was recorded for another French Ligue 1 team Stade Brestois, with 16%. No team was exempt from experiencing a decrease in valuation.
