According to Dutch publication De Telegraaf (h/t Liverpool Echo), former Liverpool star Dirk Kuyt has praised the Reds’ stance on their Premier League title concerns.
With the season in limbo, there has been a number of voices calling for what is to be done. The likes of Rio Ferdinand look to have an agenda against the Reds as they try to pass off a vendetta as an act for the greater good.
Amidst the calls that deny us a well-earned title, the club had a point to make regarding the topic. Instead, Liverpool have focussed on sending across a positive message by looking after their staff and the community.
The club’s stance was noted by Kuyt, who terms the club’s lack of outward concern over the Premier League title as “admirable”.
“I also find it admirable how Liverpool is dealing with the current situation. The league title would not have escaped them.”
In spite of there being chances of us being denied the title, the club have decided to focus on the larger issue. According to Kuyt, the Reds’ lack of concern over their own sporting aims deserves credit, especially during a worldwide health crisis.
The Dutchman implored the need to identify the urgency of the situation at hand. He also went on to praise Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s stand on the matter. The Reds boss had earlier commented on the need to take the opinion of experts to handle the issue effectively.
“But no matter how great the craving is after 30 years without a championship, you don’t hear anyone claim it.”
The Reds have attempted to do their part for the Merseyside community by donating to local food banks, launching new schemes to help the vulnerable and ensuring their staff are paid in spite of matches being suspended.
The club also launched an initiative known as LFC Connect. Its aim is to encourage elderly people around the community to keep in touch and share any issues or worries they have.
It was earlier reported that the club would pay as much as £750,000 to help pay the non-essential staff for the suspended home games. The club alongside the LFC Foundation and Red Neighbours also pledged £40,000 to back Fans Supporting Foodbanks in the absence of Premier League football.
The Reds have stepped up at a time of grave emergency and have showcased their ability to do the right thing even if it comes at their cost. Fans will not need to look far to see where the club’s priorities lie at this troubled time.
Jurgen Klopp set off the chain of events by penning an inspired letter to fans just after the suspension of the league. The club has since backed him up to show that our actions speak just as loud as our words.
