According to SoFoot (h/t Mirror), Manchester United hero Robin van Persie has perfectly illustrated the differences between Liverpool and Manchester United’s transfer policies.
The Reds and the Red Devils have had contrasting fortunes in the market in recent years. United have continued to throw money at players with mixed results while the Merseysiders can do no wrong.
Almost everything that Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards have touched has turned to gold as the Reds now boast of a side that can compete against the best in world football.
The fact that we have done this without having to spend beyond our means has not been lost on Van Persie. For the Dutchman, the contrast with how his former side operates is not lost.
It’s not that Liverpool have not spent big, Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk were big-money signings. They were by no means gambles as the Reds exactly knew what they were getting.
It pales in contrast to United, who went big on a number of players, who have struggled to make an impact. Liverpool sign players who fit the system while United have focussed on marketing gimmicks.
“If you compare it to Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp was appointed and players were selected who fit in with the football philosophy, not from marketing motives.
The biggest example of this is the multi-million dollar signing of Alexis Sanchez. One of the league’s best players at Arsenal, he has looked like a fish out of water at Old Trafford.
Van Persie goes on to say that United’s high-risk approach leaves the whole team vulnerable if it doesn’t pan out as expected. The club has to now believe that Ole Gunnar Solksjaer can come up with a philosophy of his own. Van Persie spent three seasons at Old Trafford. He led United to their last Premier League title in 2013.
As a Liverpool fan, we have had our share of duds in the past. It is refreshing to see that the club have learned their lessons and have considerably altered their fortunes in recent times. As for United’s troubles, we couldn’t care less.
