Passing the mantle – Liverpool legend opens up on meeting his successor for the first time

Steven Gerrard reveals first meeting with Jordan Henderson

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has every reason to proud of Jordan Henderson. The Reds skipper has done justice to the armband he inherited from the current Rangers boss five years ago.

The 29-year-old has been a true inspiration and has led from the front both on and off the pitch. Henderson has been an influential figure in the players’ response against coronavirus (h/t Mirror).

“He’s a very selfless person, on and off the pitch”

The fact that the player has been on the forefront of that gesture is not lost on Gerrard who wouldn’t expect any lesser from his successor. Gone are the days when a shy Henderson’s family asked Stevie to keep an eye on him. Today it is Henderson who keeps a watchful eye out to help those who need it (h/t Mirror

“I remember he came into Liverpool as a shy lad and his family asked me to keep an eye on him.”

Gerrard revealed it was a dream to play alongside such a selfless player and that he always was a proponent of Henderson’s talents (h/t Mirror).

The Rangers’ boss revealed is pleased with his successor’s progress both as a player and as a human being. A true role model for the kids, Henderson is someone to emulate (h/t Mirror

).

“He’s a fantastic man and he’s become a top-class midfielder”

Henderson can become the first Liverpool skipper to lift the Premier League trophy

Hendo the redeemer!

Eyebrows were raised when Liverpool spent £20m on him in 2011. But, nearly a decade on, it appears that the money was well spent.

Henderson has taken criticism in his stride and is today one of the first players on the teamsheet. A leader of men, he has marshaled the players around him and has led from the front.

His importance could be gauged as far away as 2014 when his absence saw Liverpool throw away a chance at winning the Premier League. Since then, he has only grown.

Henderson is just one of just five captains in Liverpool history to have lifted the European Cup and the first since Gerrard in 2005.

He can now go one better than his predecessor by lifting the club’s first league title in thirty years.
