According to reliable journalist Melissa Reddy of the Independent, Liverpool have not given up in their chase of RB Leipzig sensation Timo Werner.
The Reds have, however, are yet to make concrete decisions regarding transfers. This is because of the financial implications of coronavirus crisis and the uncertainty over how it will affect the player market.
Werner has been on the club’s radar since 2015 when he was at Stuttgart. Interest has peaked in the last couple of seasons given the player’s suitability to the Liverpool system.
That interest has been openly reciprocated by the 24-year-old who is keen to make the switch to Anfield. He has already described his desire to play under Jurgen Klopp, who he termed the best manager in the world.
Liverpool already have an established front three of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. Replacing any one of the three is no mean feat but it’s not one that Werner might find daunting.
The Reds were more than willing to pay the £50million
required to land the player. They viewed the figure to be fair considering his abilities. The coronavirus crisis, however, has thrown a spanner in the works. With revenue streams stuck in limbo, clubs have been losing money at an alarming rate – something Liverpool is not immune to. The Reds are now set to have a quiet summer unless an unforeseen emergency forces their hand.
Liverpool are set to stay loyal to the recruitment strategy that has taken them to the top of English and European football.
The intent will be to look for value rather than to splurge this summer. Given the smart recruitment undertaken in the last few years, it remains to be seen who the Reds add to the squad this time around.
