Liverpool set to battle London duo for Diego Llorente

According to Spanish publication AS as cited by Hammersnews (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are interested in Real Sociedad star Diego Llorente.

The 26-year-old Real Madrid youth product has also garnered interest from West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur.

After failing to make the mark at the Santiago Bernabeu, Llorente moved to Sociedad in 2017. He has since thrived at the Reale Arena and has made 77 appearances so far. He has also contributed to seven goals and two assists

The Spanish centre-back is also capable of playing at right-back and in defensive midfield. This versatility will be an added bonus in today’s changing landscape.

Llorente is good on the ball and is strong in the air. His ability to make accurate passes and bring the ball out of defence also adds to his appeal. According to the report, he has a release clause of £45m release clause in his contract.

It is difficult to see Llorente displace either Gomez or Van Dijk in Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI. At the very best, the Spaniard will be a backup. Paying the release clause will make him the second most expensive defender in Reds history.

It makes no sense for the club to pay such money for a player who will be the third choice at best at this point in time.

Llorente was given his senior debut at Real Madrid by then boss Jose Mourinho. Now at Tottenham, the North Londoners are also keen on the player.
