Liverpool earmark La liga star with a £67m release clause for a summer transfer

Liverpool add Diego Carlos to transfer shortlist

According to Spanish publication Marca (h/t Express), Liverpool have added Sevilla defender Diego Carlos to their summer transfer shortlist.

Jurgen Klopp has led Liverpool back to the top of domestic and continental football. He is, however, not content, and is keen to further strengthen his side in the upcoming window. The 27-year-old Carlos is one of them.

The Brazilian has enjoyed an excellent debut season in La Liga since joining Sevilla in the summer from Nantes for £16million

Diego Carlos in action for Sevilla

A mainstay in the Sevilla defence, the Spanish side are third in La Liga with the fifth-best defensive record. Carlos has actively contributed to it with a series of fine performances. This has also seen him grab the attention of Spanish giants Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, and Barcelona apart from us.

Sevilla is not immune to the financial implications of the coronavirus crisis. According to the report, the club’s director of football Monchi could end up selling one or two key players, including Carlos. The player, for his part, remains focussed on training. He will assess his options once the season is finished.

Defence is not an area Liverpool need heavy investment in

The Brazilian’s contract at the Ramos Sanchez-Pizjuan runs until 2024. He has a release clause worth £67million and will prove to be a costly investment if the Reds decide to pursue the deal. (h/t Express)

Liverpool already have a strong rearguard, with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez at the heart of it. They are excellent ball-playing defenders and suit Klopp’s style to the dot. Although the future of Dejan Lovren is uncertain, it makes no sense for the club to spend anything close to Carlos’ release clause.

Carlos is a luxury that Liverpool do not need right now. The money, if available, is better served being invested in other parts of the squad.
