Arsenal to fight Liverpool for La Liga star with £67million release clause

Arsenal enter race for Liverpool target Diego Carlos

According to Spanish outlet El Desmarque (h/t Express), Premier League giants Arsenal have entered the race for Liverpool target Diego Carlos.

The Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is focussing on defensive reinforcements this summer. This has forced him to lock horns with the Reds for the impressive La Liga star.

The 27-tear-old has a contract keeping him at Seville until 2024. Arsenal can however get their man if they are willing to pay his release clause worth £67million

The Brazilian defender joined Sevilla in the summer from Nantes for £13.5million. He has so far made 31 appearances for the club this season, scoring 2 goals. (h/t Transfermarkt)

A lynchpin in defence, the Spanish side are 3rd in La Liga with the fifth-best defensive record. Carlos has contributed to it with a series of excellent performances that have seen him grab the attention of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

According to the report, Liverpool are interested in making a bid for the player. Jurgen Klopp is keen to bring in a partner for Virgil van Dijk and views Carlos as the ideal target.

Makes no financial sense

Although Dejan Lovren’s future is up in the air, central defence is not an area that needs massive investment for the Reds. The Croatian is at best the third choice defender, with the likes of Van Dijk and Joe Gomez ahead of him.

The defense is not an area Liverpool need heavy investment in

Van Dijk and Gomez have formed an excellent partnership at the heart of the Liverpool rearguard. The duo have continued to go from strength to strength every time they have played together.

With Joel Matip a capable understudy, the Reds are not under pressure to go big on a player who is not necessarily better than what we already have.

Still 22, Gomez has benefitted from playing alongside the best centre-back in the world. There is no reason for the Reds to splash the cash when there are other areas that need reinforcing. If Arsenal are willing to meet Carlos’ release clause, they are more than welcome to do so.
