Liverpool have already spoken to RB Leipzig regarding Timo Werner

According to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano (h/t Express), Liverpool have already held talks with Bundesliga side RB Leipzig regarding star striker Timo Werner.

The 24-year-old Werner has been heavily linked with an exit from Germany heading into the summer, with Liverpool one of the teams emerging as the German international’s next destination.

The speculations gained traction after Werner publically claimed his admiration for who he called the best team in the world.

Signing the player was always the club’s intention. More so when you realize we could lose Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane for the Africa Cup of Nations next year.

The current backup options in the attack are underwhelming. Divock Origi hasn’t been able to replicate the previous season’s form while Xherdan Shaqiri’s Reds career looks set to be over.

According to Romano, the Reds told the German club two weeks ago that they want more time to sign Werner. The player’s release clause is due to expire on June 15, but Liverpool won’t be tabling the quoted £52million

It is a risky move by the Reds to let the player’s clause run out. The Germans now are firmly in the front seat when it comes to negotiations.

However, they could find they are holding a double-edged sword. Leipzig will have to consider that Werner’s release clause will drop to £36million next summer. This combined with the player’s insistence on moving to Merseyside, the Reds have enough going in their favour.

He is also said to have given Liverpool his word that he will wait for the Reds to make their final decision before making any calls on his future.
