According to a report from Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (h/t Daily Star), Liverpool are considering a raid on Premier League rivals Chelsea for the signing of defender Antonio Rudiger.
The 27-year-old Rudiger has been with the Blues for three years now, having signed from AS Roma back in 2017. Till date, he has featured 115 times for the London club, scoring six goals
.Rudiger endured a difficult 2019/20 campaign, during which he struggled with injuries and poor form. As a result, he made just 19 Premier League starts in total. The German international has just two years left on his contract, and with no talks of a renewal, he could be sold this summer. (h/t Daily Star)
And, as per the report, Liverpool are one of the clubs showing an interest in signing the 27-year-old.
It goes without saying that we need to beef up our defence heading into the next campaign. The arrival of Kostas Tsimikas has added depth in the left-back department. And now, a centre-back should be a top priority for Jurgen Klopp & co., in order to replace Dejan Lovren.
The Croatian left Anfield for Zenit St. Petersburg at the end of the 2019/20 campaign and given Joel Matip’s injury record, bolstering the centre-back department is a no-brainer.
Rudiger, though, would hardly represent a solid option. Klopp will have a sound knowledge of the German, given that he spent a few years with the Dortmund youth team, when Jurgen was the manager of the first-team. However, since joining Chelsea, the defender has hardly inspired confidence.
Other options such as Aissa Mandi and Ben White would be better options for the club to look at.
