Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp must offload one of 7 players to complete £27m transfer

Jurgen Klopp must sell in order to buy Thiago

According to a report from The Times (h/t Mirror), Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will have to sell one of seven players if he wishes to sign Bayern Munich superstar Thiago Alcantara this summer.

The 29-year-old Spanish international has entered the final year of his contract with Bayern Munich. He has been heavily linked with a switch to Anfield of late, with the German champions open to selling for a transfer fee of £27m. (h/t Mirror)

Thiago has less than twelve months left on his contract

However, Liverpool currently do not have the necessary funds to splash the cash in order to land the former Barcelona midfielder, owing to the coronavirus pandemic. And, therefore, in order to raise funds for the signing of Thiago, Klopp will be forced into selling one of the seven midfielders currently at his disposal. (h/t Mirror)

Currently, we have seven central midfielders on our books – captain Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Fabinho, Georginio Wijnaldum, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Marko Grujic.

Of these seven, only Grujic, who returned from a loan spell at Hertha Berlin, can be considered as a dispensable member. And while it has been claimed that the Bundesliga outfit are eyeing a permanent move for him, the aforementioned report

insists that Liverpool are struggling to find a bidder who would meet his £20m valuation.

Wijnaldum could be another option that the club look to sell, given his contract situation. The Netherlands international is in the final year of his deal with the club and talks over a new contract are yet to start. However, both the parties are intent on hashing out a deal soon. (h/t Mirror

So, the best option for us, as things stand, is finding a bidder for Grujic. Along with him, offloading other fringe players like Harry Wilson and Xherdan Shaqiri could help fund a move for Thiago.

The 29-year-old is one of the best in his position in the world. His signing would only serve to elevate the quality of the squad as he go about building on our success from the 2019/20 season.
