Leicester City join Liverpool in Ozan Kabak chase

According to the Daily Mail (h/t Leicestershire Live), Leicester City have entered the race to sign FC Schalke 04 defender Ozan Kabak, who has also been linked with Liverpool.

The 20-year-old Kabak came through the youth ranks at Turkish outfit Galatasaray. He went on to make 18 first-team appearances for the club, before joining VfB Stuttgart in January 2019. Only six months later, he was snapped up by Schalke, for whom he went on to make 28 first-team appearances in his debut season, scoring thrice. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Valued at £35m, it was claimed that Liverpool had shown an interest in signing the centre-back, who has made one appearance for the Turkish national team. (h/t Liverpool Echo)

However, it seems like we will have to deal with competition from our former manager Brendan Rodgers, who is hoping to sign the 20-year-old at his current club Leicester City. (h/t Leicestershire Live)

Having lost Dejan Lovren to Zenit St. Petersburg this summer, Jurgen Klopp needs to bring in a new defender to ensure enough depth at the heart of the defence. Kabak, to that end, would be a solid enough addition, even though Schalke ended up conceding as many as 58 goals in the recently concluded season.

The 20-year-old cuts an imposing figure at the back and at 20, has his best years well ahead of him.

However, Liverpool, so far, have shown reluctance to go big in the transfer market this summer. So, it remains to be seen if the club do act upon their reported interest in the centre-back.

We have already brought in Kostas Tsimikas to provide cover at left-back. A centre-half, and an attacking reinforcement should be on the agenda for Klopp & co. next.
