30-year-old Liverpool midfield star addresses contract renewal talks

Georginio Wijnaldum remains coy amidst talks of a new contract at Liverpool

Speaking in the post-match interview on Amazon Prime (h/t Liverpool ECHO) after the win against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Georginio Wijnaldum played down talks regarding his contract situation at Liverpool.

Wijnaldum joined the Reds in the summer of 2016 from Newcastle United and has since been a vital part of Liverpool’s midfield. The Dutch midfielder played a big role in Liverpool’s Premier League, Champions League, and FIFA Club World Cup triumphs in the past 2 years.

This means that Wijnaldum will be free to agree terms with another club for a move in the summer as a free agent.

Speaking about his contract situation at the club, Wijnaldum reiterated that it was the club’s job to talk about his contract as he praised the support he has gotten from the fans over the years.

“I already said in my previous interview, I don’t talk about my contract situation, I talk about the game. The club talk about my contract. There’s a connection, there was a connection from the first moment I came here, the supporters supported me a lot, but it’s not for me to talk about.”

Liverpool scored 4 past a hapless Wolverhampton Wanderers as the Reds cruised to a 4-0 win which saw them go level on points with league leaders Tottenham Hotspur. Nevertheless, Wijnaldum refused to label it as a “Champion’s” performance and conveyed that it is a display they have to put in on a weekly basis.

“I don’t wanna say champions performance, because we did our job, we have to do this every week. It was a good game, the position play was good and we scored good goals.”

Wijnaldum scored Liverpool’s second goal of the match in front of 2000 fans at Anfield, which was the first time that spectators were allowed inside the stadium since March 11.

Expressing

his gratitude towards the fans, Wijnaldum went on to hail the “vital” Liverpool support at Anfield which they had been missing for almost 9 months.

“It was a really, really great feeling and of course to win the game 4-0. They help to improve the performance a lot because they’re cheering for you and supporting you in the game.”

We now travel to Denmark on Tuesday to take on FC Midtjylland in the UEFA Champions League group stages. The Reds have already qualified to the UCL last-16 as group winners courtesy of a 1-0 home win against Ajax last week.
