Report: Liverpool eyeing cut-price move for 20-year-old starlet from La Liga

Liverpool are interested in 20-year-old Sevilla goalkeeper Alfonso Pastor

A report by The Boot Room citing Spanish outlet AS (h/t Liverpool Echo) states that Liverpool are interested in signing Sevilla goalkeeper Alfonso Pastor in January.

The 20-year-old goalkeeper is in the final months of his contract, which runs out in the summer of 2021. Due to him not yet signing a contract renewal at Sevilla, the Reds could purchase the young goalkeeper on a cut-price deal in the winter transfer window. (h/t Liverpool Echo

The report also cites interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid, who will rival Liverpool for the youngster’s signature.

Pastor would be the replacement for another Andalusian goalkeeper, Adrian San Miguel, who had 2 stints with Sevilla’s rivals Real Betis before a move to the Premier League.

Liverpool signed Adrian from West Ham United on a free transfer in the summer of 2019. The Spanish goalkeeper saw his Anfield career start off to a flyer after his penalty heroics against Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup final.

A string of high-profile errors by Adrian ever since has shifted Jurgen Klopp’s faith to the inexperienced Irish youngster Caoimhin Kelleher between the sticks recently. (h/t Liverpool Echo

With Kelleher starting in Liverpool’s wins against Ajax and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the past week and Adrian’s contract running out in the summer, it is apparent that Pastor would come in as an understudy to Alisson Becker.

Pastor was promoted to the Sevilla senior side this season and made his debut for Sevilla in the 4-0 UEFA Champions League loss against Chelsea.

Despite the inexperience and a shaky debut, the youngster is highly thought of and would be a wise long-term signing by the Reds.
