Jurgen Klopp says he got emotional after fans sang ‘YNWA’ for the first time at Anfield since March

Speaking in the post-match conference after a 4-0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday (h/t Liverpool ECHO), Jurgen Klopp expressed his jubilation over hearing the ‘YNWA’ chant for the first time in 9 months at Anfield.

Liverpool cruised to a win at Anfield against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday as Mohamed Salah, Georginio Wijnaldum, and Joel Matip scored before Nelson Semedo put one in his own net to hand to seal the 4-0 scoreline.

It was the first time since March that fans were allowed to be in stadiums, and fans belted out the ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ chant as the players made their way on to the pitch.

Jurgen Klopp expressed his emotions over seeing the fans back at Anfield and was pleased with what the 2000 spectators got to see on the pitch.

“I think all that back without the football game would have been great. When we came out for warming up we had no idea what to expect but when we came out we all had goosebumps. When the people saw the first player they got quite noisy and the rest of us thought ‘oh my God, that sounds really loud.”

Klopp went on to highlight the bigger picture and said that he wishes the same kind of normalcy slowly returns to society as a whole and not just football stadiums.

“It is a little bit like the news about the people who invented the vaccine. We know it is ready so we can start doing it. Having people in the stadium is another really good sign. Hopefully, we can build on it as a society, not just a football society. People in the stadium were in the best shape and that was really nice. If none of my players or medical department tell me any player was injured it was the perfect night.”

The German manager also expressed his delight at hearing the Liverpool fans sing the ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ chant at Anfield for the first time since their defeat to Atletico Madrid on March 11.

“It was outstanding. Outstanding. Getting out of the dressing room and warming up was a proper goosebump moment. During the game, it was emotional, it was so nice to hear You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

The win saw Liverpool reclaim the second spot on the table, trailing league leaders Tottenham Hotspur only on goal difference. Klopp’s men now have the task of travelling to Denmark to face FC Midtjylland on Wednesday with the Reds having already qualified for the UCL last-16 with a game to spare.
