Speaking after the game on Wednesday night (h/t Liverpool Echo), Jurgen Klopp condemned the actions of Liverpool fans who were responsible for the Real Madrid bus being damaged.
Los Galacticos’ coach had its windows broken as fans hurled objects at the bus while the Madrid team made its way to Anfield. This led to Liverpool releasing a statement
, apologising to their opponent and threatening actions against the perpetrators.“It is totally unacceptable and shameful behaviour of a few individuals. We sincerely apologise to our visitors for any distress caused. We will work together with Merseyside Police to establish the facts and identify those responsible.”
After the end of the second leg, the German manager was asked to give his views on his incident. He branded this incident as ‘unhelpful’ but did not add much to the club’s statement that was released earlier.
He mentioned that 15th April is an important day for the club. It marks the 32nd anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster which saw 96 (and later, 97) Liverpool fans tragically lose their lives in a stadium disaster.
“That these situations are not helpful everyone knows, nothing else from my side. Tomorrow we have a really important day together with our fans and that is what I am thinking about. I think the club said what we have to say about it.”
To make matters worse, Liverpool went on to draw the second leg against Madrid. This meant that we were unable to overturn the 3-1 first-leg deficit and are out of the UEFA Champions League.
The club’s focus must now solely be on securing a top-4 finish at the end of the season. Failure to do that will mark this season as a gigantic failure for a club of our size.
