A report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo via Sport Witness (h/t Liverpool Echo
) mentions that Barcelona midfielder, Pedri, has denied the chance to join Liverpool. The youngster has been linked with a shock move to Anfield recently. And reports emerged of the Catalan club trying to persuade the Spaniard to stay at Camp Nou by offering him a new contract.
This new contract was said to increase the 18-year-old’s release clause to a mammoth £350million. Currently, he is believed to have a £70million release clause in his contract which he signed after leaving Las Palmas last summer.
Barca’s current manager, Ronald Koeman, seems to rate the midfielder very highly. Speaking in a documentary soon after the Spaniard was signed, Koeman declared Pedri as the greatest talent in the land.
“There’s one, his name is Pedri, signed from Las Palmas. I don’t know him, but they say he must be the new Laudrup, the new Iniesta. But I don’t know him. We’ll see. He’s the greatest talent in all of Spain.”
These comments would sting more for Liverpool fans after the report stating that Pedri would not be interested in a move to the current Premier League champions.
Georginio Wijnaldum’s future remains up in the air as he enters the final weeks of his current contract at Liverpool. Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have been plagued by injuries while James Milner is not getting any younger.
In such a situation, if not Pedri, someone should be signed in midfield by Klopp. The injury crisis really derailed the club’s season this time around.
And having a fit and able squad next campaign would be a massive step for the Reds if they are to be back amongst silverware anytime soon.
