Talking in an interview with Liverpool Echo (h/t Metro), Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg revealed that he wants to go out on loan again next season.
The 19-year-old left Liverpool in early February to join Preston North End in a 6-month loan deal. He has since made 16 appearances, 15 of those being starts for the Championship side, and has impressed his superiors at the Deepdale Stadium.
The Dutchman left the Reds at the very end of the winter transfer window. And instead, Jurgen Klopp saw Preston’s Ben Davies join his squad.
Liverpool have had a plethora of injuries to their centre-backs, with Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, and Joe Gomez still out with injury. Despite that, Davies is yet to get a start.
And with the injured trio returning to action next season, things could get even tougher for Van den Berg if he wants to break into the Liverpool starting XI. The teenager himself wishes
to go out on loan again this summer.“I don’t really know where I will be in the summer. I want to go on loan again. That’s what I’d prefer. I will see, there is no rush… I want to be out on loan in the summer and to gain more experience so I can be ready when I come back to Liverpool to play in the first team.”
It is probably a wise call to loan out the youngster to not stunt his development. The club already has a number of centre-backs, with the further addition of Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies in the January transfer window.
Even Fabinho can slot in that position while Nat Phillips has impressed in the few chances he has been handed. So it seems difficult for the Dutch teenager to get a lot of minutes.
A loan to a Championship side, or even a Premier League side, could just turn out to be what the doctor ordered for the former PEC Zwolle man.
