According to a report by Hampshire Live (h/t ESPN), Southampton are keen on signing Liverpool defender, Neco Williams. He is seen as a top target to strengthen the right side of their defence.
The Saints are not the first club linked with Williams in this transfer window. Last week, TeamTalk (h/t Mirror), as covered by TheKopTimes, mentioned that Burnley, Norwich City, Swansea, and Cardiff City are all keen on Williams.
The 20-year-old has 25 senior appearances for Liverpool under his belt already and had a handful of appearances this season as well. Trent Alexander-Arnold remains the first-choice right-back for the club.
However, Williams is an able understudy and can step in when Jurgen Klopp wants to rotate the squad or give Trent some rest. There is, of course, Joe Gomez who can step in at right-back if necessary.
But the Welshman has played in that position for the majority of his career. Liverpool’s centre-backs would perhaps be most needed, and best-utilized, in their original positions.
And Liverpool fans would agree that keeping Neco for a few more seasons is wiser than cashing in on him right now. Any move from Anfield, hence, would make more sense for Klopp if it was a loan transfer and not a permanent one.
Williams is with the Wales squad in the UEFA Euros 2020 and his stock could rise further if he impresses on the international stage. It could even impress his superiors in Merseyside to hand him a more prominent role for next season.
It remains to be seen where Neco will ply his trade next season. But it is undeniable that a regular role in a top-flight team would go a long way in benefitting his development.
