Liverpool willing to pay £43m to beat Man United to Cristian Romero

According to Spanish outlet AS (h/t Express), Liverpool are plotting a late hijack on Manchester United’s attempt to sign Argentine defender Cristian Romero from Juventus.

Romero has been with Juventus since 2019, having signed from fellow Serie A side club Genoa. But the Argentine has spent the last two seasons on loan, first at Genoa itself, before spending the previous campaign at Atalanta.

Romero enjoyed a fine campaign with the latter club, who are now intent on triggering an option to make his transfer permanent. However, that would be only to sell him on for a bigger profit as Liverpool and Manchester United vie for his signing. (h/t Express

Liverpool have already signed a new centre-back this summer, with Ibrahima Konate arriving from RB Leipzig. However, given the nightmares of the last season, it would be perfectly understandable if Jurgen Klopp & co. went out and brought in another defender.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are all expected to be fit for the start of the season. But the latter’s injury record does not paint a pretty picture. Throw in the fact that Konate has had some serious issues in the past couple of years and it would seem a good idea for Liverpool to splash on another defender.

For that, Liverpool are now said to be preparing an offer of £43m to try and sign Romero this summer, in the process, also beating rivals Manchester United to his transfer. (h/t Express)

With Nat Phillips also being linked with a transfer away from Anfield, bringing in another centre-back could end up as a smart decision for Liverpool. Whether the club see it that way or deem there are enough options remains to be seen.
