According to Lancs Live, Liverpool starlet Leighton Clarkson could be headed for the EFL Championship next season as Blackburn Rovers consider a loan swoop.
A product of the Liverpool youth academy, the 19-year-old has been tipped for a bright future in the game and even likened to Bayern Munich legend Phillip Lahm. A defensive midfielder primarily, Clarkson has played at centre-back on occasions and can play as a No.8 as well.
To date, Clarkson has made 38 appearances for Liverpool’s Under-18 side and featured 23 times for the club’s Under-23 side as well. Having made his senior debut for the Reds in a Carabao Cup clash back in December 2019, he has added two more appearances to his tally, even featuring in the UEFA Champions League in the recently concluded campaign. With regular first-team opportunities not entirely forthcoming at the moment, though, Clarkson could be set for a loan spell away from Liverpool, with Blackburn Rovers keen. The Lancashire-based outfit took on another Reds’ starlet, Harvey Elliott, on loan last season and the young forward thrived in the 2020/21 campaign.
Blackburn remain keen on Elliott but understand that Liverpool might decide to keep him at the club. Instead, they are looking to raid the Reds to bolster their midfield with Clarkson.
Going away on loan to Blackburn worked out quite well for Elliott last season. With Liverpool enjoying a good relation with the Championship club, a temporary deal for Clarkson could potentially be engineered.
The 19-year-old has immense potential and regular exposure to first-team football can help him develop faster, boosting Liverpool in the longer run.
