According to Liverpool Echo, Liverpool are expecting young full-back, Neco Williams, ‘to aim’ for a transfer once he returns from the UEFA Euros 2020.
The 20-year-old is currently with Wales at the Euros and made his first start in a defeat against Italy. At Liverpool, he has perennially served as a backup for Trent Alexander-Arnold since his debut in October 2019.
He has also made just four appearances for the Reds in 2021. The report
mentions that there was an inquiry by Southampton for a loan in January, and Burnley, Leeds United, and Aston Villa have also shown interest in the past. The Reds would not stand in the way of Williams if he wants a move. In fact, they would also not be opposed to a permanent exit in the summer- with the player expected to be available at around £10m.
The report says that the club understands that the Welshman needs to play week-in week-out, but with Alexander-Arnold still very young and the club’s undisputed first-choice in that position, Williams’ chances to break into the first team are slim.
If he has a decent showing at the Euros, it could invite interest from clubs and maybe even convince the German manager to keep Williams. Wales have at least one game left in the competition- the round of 16 encounter.
The club could actually use Williams next season. Joe Gomez and Fabinho have both deputized in the right-back position in the past but Williams is a natural in that position as he has played there throughout his career.
If Trent undergoes fitness issues or an injury, Klopp could find himself in a very tricky position down that right-hand side. However, he can still count on Gomez’s versatility to deputize there.
