Transfer News: Liverpool tipped to rival Aston Villa for James Ward-Prowse

Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Birmingham Live), Noel Whelan has claimed that Liverpool could look to make a move for Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse, who is a transfer target for Aston Villa.

A product of the Southampton academy, Ward-Prowse has grown into the club captain at St. Mary’s and is a carving out a place for himself in the England squad as well, having earned eight caps so far for the Three Lions.

A proven entity in the Premier League, Ward-Prowse had a solid 2020/21 season during which he finished with an impressive tally of nine goals and seven assists form 41 games in all competitions.

A set-piece savant, the 26-year-old has emerged as a transfer target for Aston Villa this summer. However, Whelan seems to think that Ward-Prowse could be someone that could interest Liverpool as well in the current transfer window.

“We do know that Aston Villa have brought in a lot of midfield players. They’re still looking to bring in more. We did wonder where they’re all going to fit in if they go for Ward-Prowse. Then again, Liverpool might fancy Ward-Prowse.

“He’s that kind of midfield player as well, especially when it comes to set-pieces as well. You’ve got to look at delivery, you’ve got to look at everything. He’s tenacious in midfield, he’s got that energy about him and is a player that could probably suit Liverpool as well.”

Liverpool do a need a new central midfielder this summer following the exit of Georginio Wijnaldum. The seasoned campaigner ran his contract down and signed for Paris Saint-Germain, leaving a huge hole in the Reds’ midfield unit.

While Ward-Prowse has not been linked with Liverpool as of yet, he could be an interesting option for Jurgen Klopp & co. to look at given his proven pedigree, age as well his good, solid all-round attributes.
