According to Calciomercato journalist, Enrico Camelio, via Sport Witness (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have made contact with Inter Milan regarding the availability of midfielder, Nicolo Barella.
The Serie A club could be forced into selling some of their stars due to the financial situation they are in. And in light of this, the Reds contacted the Serie A champions about Barella’s availability.
The Reds are without Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutchman is off to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer and has left a void to be filled in Jurgen Klopp’s team.
Hence, the links with Barella come as no surprise. Midfield is one area that Michael Edwards and co. should bolster.
But if the report cited above is to be believed, Barella may not be the answer to their potential problems, because Inter are ‘not planning’ to let the 24-year-old leave in the summer.
He has had two impressive seasons in Serie A for Inter since his transfer from Cagliari. He boasted of an impressive 14 assists in all competitions this past season.
However, the Reds may have to look elsewhere if they want to bring in a central midfielder. Inter’s stance on Barella should not stop the club from chasing a new signing in the middle of the park.
The Dutchman was an important part of Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI and a regular feature week in, week out. Curtis Jones can take up that helm but the youngster cannot be expected to take over the entire burden in midfield so quickly.
Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, if fit next season, could play a big role in that regard. But a new acquisition in the market would undoubtedly relax the fans even more.
