According to a report by Goal (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are ‘showing interest’ in Aston Villa stars, Ollie Watkins and John McGinn.
McGinn, a central midfielder, was a vital part of Aston Villa’s midfield last season where they put on a great showing, especially in the first half of the campaign. Watkins was their main goal threat up front.
The 25-year-old Englishman was signed from Championship side Brentford last year. And he was lethal for the Villans, scoring 16
times over the course of the season. These two players could solve the two potential problems Jurgen Klopp’s squad has at the moment. Roberto Firmino is devoid of any real competition, with Divock Origi not getting regular starts.
And the Reds are a man short in midfield after Georginio Wijnaldum left the club to PSG as a free agent.
Watkins is not a bad option. But given that he signed for Villa just last year and had a good season in front of goal, the Reds would know it will not be the easiest task in the world to land him.
However, recruitment should be made in both areas, whether it’s in the form of the Aston Villa duo, or someone else. The report also mentions that Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri could be sold in the summer for suitable offers.
Firmino is a dependable striker for Jurgen Klopp and has been a mainstay in his lineup for years. However, he turns 30 this year and as per The Telegraph (Subscription Required), he is on a contract that runs out in 2023.
While that is no cause for the alarm bells to ring just yet, the German manager would be wise to future-proof the attacking department this summer.
