According to transfer news from Liverpool Echo (h/t Daily Star), Liverpool are all set to go head-to-head with Arsenal for Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Yves Bissouma.
The Mali international joined the Seagulls from Lille back in 2018. And since then, he has impressed in their midfield, catching the eye of two of Premier League’s biggest clubs.
The Gunners are planning an £80million
raid on Brighton for Ben White and Bissouma. But they could have to battle the Reds for Bissouma in the summer.Liverpool will be without Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutch midfielder has left for PSG as a free agent as he ran out his deal at Anfield.
Bissouma, 24, could be the man to fill the void left by Wijnaldum. He has ample top-flight experience under Graham Potter and can add depth as well as quality to the Reds’ midfield.
Last season’s injury crisis saw midfielders Fabinho and Jordan Henderson having to slot in at centre-back, and that was with Wijnaldum in the squad.
If such a situation repeats itself, Jurgen Klopp could find himself in an unwanted problem. Competing with the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea would not be easy.
While Liverpool are a powerhouse in Europe, the level of competition in every tournament means they need to have a squad that can withstand injury crises and packed fixture lists.
And for that, signing a replacement for Wijnaldum becomes important. Whether that player would be Bissouma remains to be seen, but this is one area where Klopp should pay attention to.
