Speaking to Anfield Watch (h/t Liverpool Echo), reliable transfer expert Fabrizio Romano mentioned that Liverpool are eager to hold on to Kostas Tsimikas despite interest from Spanish clubs.
The Greek defender was signed by the Reds last summer from Olympiacos as a way of offering Andy Robertson some competition. But he has failed to make a mark on the senior team as yet.
Despite managing just 7 appearances last season, he would be important as Roberson’s backup. And that is why Liverpool’s apparent stance, as revealed by Romano (h/t Liverpool Echo
), makes sense.“I have to tell you that he had some interest from Spain, Tsimikas, they were talking to him. They were trying to sign him but Liverpool wanted to protect the player, they say that they trust him, so at the moment there is nothing advanced for him leaving the club.”
Liverpool had a barrage of fitness issues in the defensive department last season. Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip suffered extensive injuries that ended their seasons.
But Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold were largely regular starters in Klopp’s XI. With the club’s centre-back pairing changing ever-so-often, it is understandable why Klopp did not rotate his full-backs as much.
That can change next season as the Reds see their top defenders edging closer to a return. Tsimikas, in that regard, can play an important role.
He can be Robertson’s backup when Jurgen Klopp wants to rotate his squad, especially in cup games, ensuring that the Scotsman is not overburdened and burnt out. But for that, Michael Edwards and Klopp would have to continue being firm in their stance until this transfer window closes.
