Giving the latest injury update in an interview with the club media during the pre-season tour in Austria, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp mentioned how close Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip are to returning to first-team action.
The four defenders suffered lengthy injuries over the past 9 months but are all nearing a return as Liverpool gear up for the pre-season matches against Bundesliga sides later this month.
Speaking on van Dijk and Gomez, the German stated that they will not train as much as the rest of the group. But, he expects a big step forward in the coming month.
“Virg and Joe will not have double sessions now for the first few days with the team… [They] look really good. I don’t know exactly when we can make the next steps but it will happen in the next four weeks, for sure – we will get a big step forward.”
Matip and Trent, on the other hand, are expected to resume normal training pretty quickly. Klopp expects both of them to be fully fit by the next few weeks. An excerpt from his interview reads:
“Joel looks good, absolutely, he is the closest probably to normal training and then we will see when we get him started for playing. Trent was a serious enough injury but now not a major one, I would say. He is close… In five or six or seven days he should be in normal team training.”
This comes as a major boost for the Reds, who want to get back to winning ways with regards to trophies. After a flying 2019/20 season, Liverpool were brought back to Earth courtesy of a big injury crisis last season.
But with the main men returning and also boosted by the addition of Ibrahima Konate in defence, our backline looks more solid than it has in recent times. However, it remains to be seen if all four are match-fit by August 14.
