The Athletic’s David Ornstein confirms that Mohammed Kudus has a release clause in his contract with West Ham United and also confirmed that he will be surprised if the player isn’t on the transfer radar of Liverpool FC.
In his Q&A on The Athletic [subscription required], here is what he had to say:
“From what I hear a wide forward is among the areas Liverpool are exploring heading into the summer window.”
“I don’t know if Kudus is an option but he is a brilliant player,”
“He has enjoyed an excellent debut season and it would be surprising if he wasn’t on the radar of Liverpool and any other leading club looking to strengthen in that part of the pitch.
“It isn’t an alleged release clause, there is one – as has been reported in various places. I don’t know the details but Kudus is not alone in having such a mechanism in his contract; Paqueta and other West Ham players do, too. You’ll remember it was one of the reasons why he didn’t end up joining Brighton.
The Ghana international has been in fine form for the Hammers since arriving in the summer and has 17 goals and six assists to boot in 45 appearances across all competitions. Mostly playing out as an attacking midfielder, he has the raw pace to feature on the wing, and he has done that for David Moyes’ side this season, leading the right flank.
One of the key factors that make Kudus
an appealing target for Liverpool is his adaptability. His ability to seamlessly transition between midfield and wing positions adds depth to his skill set and provides flexibility to any team he joins. In a squad like Liverpool’s, known for its fluid style of play and tactical versatility, Kudus could fit in seamlessly and contribute effectively to the team’s success.Furthermore, Kudus’s age aligns perfectly with Liverpool’s long-term vision. At 22, he is entering the prime years of his career and has ample room for development and improvement. Joining a club like Liverpool would not only offer him the opportunity to play at the highest level but also to learn from some of the best players and coaches in the world.
One such figure who could play a crucial role in Kudus’s development is Mohamed Salah. As Liverpool’s star winger and one of the most prolific goal-scorers in the game, Salah’s experience and expertise could certainly prove invaluable to Kudus’s growth as a player. Learning from Mo’s technique, work ethic, and decision-making on the field could help Kudus elevate his game to new heights and reach his full potential.
Moreover, with Salah approaching the latter stages of his career at 32 years old, Liverpool will soon need to identify a successor to lead their attack from the right wing. Kudus presents a compelling option for this role, with his pace, creativity, and goal-scoring ability making him a natural fit to fill Salah’s boots when the time comes.
His ability to drive forward with the ball, create chances for teammates, and find the back of the net himself would surely add a new dimension to Liverpool’s attacking play and provide incoming boss Arne Slot with additional options in midfield and on the wings.
