According to Neil Jones of Goal.com (h/t Liverpool Echo), Takumi Minamino is seen as ‘dispensible’ by Liverpool but there is a lack of interest from clubs for a permanent transfer.
The Japanese international was signed amidst much hype in the winter of 2020 from RB Salzburg. But since then, he has failed to hit the ground running at the Merseyside club.
The report mentions that Liverpool do not want another loan spell for Minamino and while he won’t be pushed out of Anfield, the club will not be opposed to a permanent transfer.
That is due to the fact that the Reds want to generate some transfer funds of their own. Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri are viewed in a similar light by the club. (h/t Liverpool Echo)
Minamino was loaned out to Southampton for the second half of last season as he failed to get regular starts under Jurgen Klopp. It seems like the 26-year-old’s race is already run at Anfield.
Even if he stays, it is hard to see him get starts ahead of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Diogo Jota. However, his versatility makes him a handy asset to have on the bench for the German manager.
Minamino can play out wide as well as in the middle of the attacking line. Hence, he could be more useful to the Reds than someone such as Origi. The Belgian striker is himself far removed from regular first-team action.
The same is the case with Xherdan Shaqiri, which is strange considering he is a regular for the Switzerland national team and came to Anfield with the reputation of having played at Inter Milan and Bayern Munich.
