A report by Eindhovens Dagblad via Sport Witness (h/t Liverpool Echo) mentions that Liverpool are ‘still on the fence’ regarding a transfer move for PSV Eindhoven striker, Donyell Malen.
The report mentions that Malen is on Borussia Dortmund’s radar as they eye a replacement for Jadon Sancho, and an ‘official offer’ could come soon. Malen has been linked with the Reds for a while now.
But it seems like the Merseysiders are still hesitant in their pursuit of the Dutchman. The 22-year-old has made waves in the Eredivisie since he was let go by Arsenal in the summer of 2017.
He has 40 goals and 18 assists in his 81 league appearances for PSV’s senior side. Those numbers are certainly impressive for a youngster like Malen, and the Reds could use a striker like him.
If they need any convincing, one can point to Roberto Firmino’s lack of goals last season and the Brazilian, who will be 30 in October, would require a long-term successor sometime soon.
Malen can be that man. Divock Origi, on the other hand, does not seem to have Jurgen Klopp’s trust as the Belgian was rarely handed starts last season.
A full international for the Netherlands national team, Malen is certainly a striker who is making good progress in his career. And at just 22 years of age, there is still a long way to go before we see the final product.
But Dortmund seem to have the lead and if the Reds want Malen to don the Liverbird upon his chest this season, then they will have to make up their mind and formalize their interest before it is too late.
