Transfer News: Juventus reject £86m bid from Liverpool for Federico Chiesa

According to Italian outlet Repubblica (h/t The Daily Mail), Serie A giants Juventus have rejected an £86m bid from Liverpool for Federico Chiesa.

The 23-year-old was one of the stars of the tournament as Italy won this summer’s European Championship. The winger scored twice in the tournament and played in all the games as Roberto Mancini’s side saw off England in the final at Wembley.

Long seen as one of Serie A’s finest young talents, Chiesa’s reputation has been enhanced by his summer showing. It comes on the back of an impressive season at Juventus where he scored 14 goals and assisted 10 in just 43 appearances. (h/t Transfermarkt)

The Turin giants endured a difficult 2020/21 campaign and only qualified for the Champions League by the skin of their teeth. Apart from Cristiano Ronaldo, Chiesa was a standout player and could be set to play a bigger role in the years to come.

Liverpool, who are in the market for attacking reinforcements, were willing to outlay what was a club-record fee for the Italian. Moreover, it would have also made him the eighth-most expensive player in the history of the game.

Juventus, however, were having none of it and are not keen to part ways with their star man. With Ronaldo not getting any younger, the Italian ace could very well become the face of the team in the upcoming years.

According to the report, Jurgen Klopp considers the versatile winger perfect for his 4-3-3 system. Both a creator and a finisher, he could slot in seamlessly in the Reds frontline.

Massimiliano Allegri however considers the winger untouchable and is in no mood to lose him. Chiesa impressed at Fiorentina for years. It would now appear that he has taken the next step in his career and could be about to write his name into the Juventus history books.

Signing Chiesa would not just be a statement of intent but would also give the Reds a truly world-class player who could emerge as a match-winner. Unfortunately, it was not to be and it remains to be seen if we will return with a bigger offer.
