Transfer News: Liverpool looking to strengthen two areas of their squad this summer

According to Melissa Reddy of The Independent, Liverpool are looking to reinforce their midfield and attack this summer.

Apart from securing Ibrahima Konate early on, the Reds have enjoyed a rather quiet summer that has been dominated by departures. A number of fringe players have already left the club.

Academy graduate Harry Wilson became the latest name to leave after his move to Fulham was made official last night. With the futures of Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri among others also under the scanner, it remains to be seen who else follows.

With the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip closing in on full fitness, Jurgen Klopp has a number of options to choose from at the back. It is therefore in other areas that the club should now look to strengthen.

The midfield is just such an area given the departure of Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutchman was ever-present during his stay at the club and will be a difficult man to replace. Jordan Henderson is not getting any younger while Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have struggled with injuries.

James Milner too is in the twilight of his career and Klopp will need to start rebuilding his next great Liverpool side. With his best players all around 30 years of age, it has to be done sooner rather than later.

Signing Diogo Jota gave the Reds another formidable forward last season. It was useful as Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino displayed a drop in form. While Mohamed Salah stepped up, we cannot afford to be overdependent on the Egyptian once again.

According to the report, the club is looking to bring in another attacker similar in profile to Jota. Interestingly, the Reds have been linked to Pedro Neto, the man who took Jota’s place at Wolves. (h/t The Liverpool Echo)

Whether he too will join the Red revolution at Anfield remains to be seen.

Liverpool landed Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota late last summer. But the club have also shown the ability to get deals done quickly when it suits them.

With the 2021/22 campaign just around three weeks away, it is imperative that we get our targets soon. This will ensure they are ready to go when needed.
