Transfer News: Liverpool and Chelsea make contact with the agent of Saul Niguez
According to Marca (h/t Express), both Liverpool and Chelsea have made contact with the agent of Spanish superstar Saul Niguez.
The 26-year-old could be on the move this summer after enduring a disappointing 2020/21 campaign with Atletico Madrid. Niguez may have won the La Liga title but saw a drop in playtime in comparison to the seasons gone by. The arrival of Rodrigo De Paul is unlikely to have improved his situation.
Niguez could very well be on his way out this summer. His situation has attracted much attention from England heading into the 2021/22 season. With just weeks to go before the new campaign kicks off, England’s biggest sides are looking to finalise their summer business.
Arch-rivals Manchester United are the favourites to land the player but now both Liverpool and Chelsea are making their move
The Reds are kind desperate need of replacing Georginio Wijnaldum who left on a free earlier this summer. The Dutchman was a regular in the Liverpool side under Jurgen Klopp and performed a specialist role in the middle of the park. Bringing in Niguez will certainly help cushion the blow of losing Wijnaldum.
Saul could definitely bring the energy in midfield that Klopp’s system demands. In fact, he showed in 2020 that he is capable of going toe to toe with the German’s best when the sides faced off in the Champions League.
If that was an audition of sorts, it is fair to say that the Spaniard passed with flying colours. According to the report, a bid of around £50m should be enough to secure the Spaniard’s signature. Whether Liverpool will get it over the line remains to be seen.

With Xherdan Shaqiti on his way out, Liverpool will have a position open to bring in a non-homegrown player. Whether the Swiss star’s exit will pave the way for the Spaniard to join the Reds remains to be seen.
If all goes well the Iberian duo of Thiago Alcantara and Niguez could hold sway in the middle of the park for Jurgen’s Reds.
