Speaking to the club’s official website after arriving in Evian for the preseason training camp, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has issued an injury update on star duo Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
The Liverpool centre-back pair have been out of action since October last year due to serious knee injuries. Their absence played a huge role in the Reds’ faltered title defence. However, heading into the new season, things are looking up for Klopp & co.
Both van Dijk and Gomez have returned to training recently and have even got some minutes in the preseason. And, the manager insisted that things are looking good for the pair, but added that no risks will be taken with regard to their recovery.
“I want to make it really clear, we push nothing. We just don’t. It looks good, this morning [it was a] normal training session.
“Sometimes in moments we swap Virgil and Joe a little bit so maybe the intensity doesn’t get too high, but in general it looks really good. How many minutes on Thursday, I don’t know but there will be some minutes for sure.”
That is without a doubt, great news for Liverpool. The Reds kick off the season against newly-promoted Norwich City. And having both van Dijk and Gomez fit and firing for the season will be a huge bonus.
With Ibrahima Konate also settling in nicely, things are looking bright for Liverpool on the defensive front, which was a major problem last season due to injuries.
But, as Klopp added, care must be taken not to rush the duo back and risk exacerbating the situation.
