Transfer News: Liverpool not interested in Nicolo Barella
According to ECHO, Liverpool were never actually interested in Nicolo Barella despite earlier links suggesting a bid from the club. It is believed that Barella’s agent generated those in a bid to get a better contract for his client from Inter Milan.
Interest in Barella seemed to have shot up after Italy’s successful Euro 2020 campaign where they were champions. Barella was a quiet influence in the side’s midfield as Italy went on to showcase their strength and expertise.
However, he came to the party against Belgium with a neatly taken goal. It was not really a surprise as Barella has been quite the name in Serie A with Cagliari and then Inter Milan. He was among several players who impressed for them as they broke Juventus’ stronghold over the Scudetto.
Liverpool weren’t really after Barella
Liverpool were said to be interested in Barella over the last month or so to the point that it was expected that they were preparing a bid of €70m. However, those claims were debunked by Get Italian Football News editor, Kaustubh Pandey.
“[The reports], I think, have been planted by Barella’s agent. Not just for Barella, but for Alessandro Bastoni as well, there was a period a few months ago where he was being linked with Liverpool and other clubs. But they have signed new contracts – maybe not announced yet, but everything has been agreed. It seems, with Barella, that his agent has been using the interest from Premier League clubs to make sure that Inter meet the requirements for a new contract.
Barella has been linked with Liverpool and Manchester United, but that is a bit silly, because he is probably going to sign a new deal. Inter will hold onto their best players. They have already sold Achraf Hakimi but they will hold onto what they have and rely on loan deals. Unless something unusual happens, people are expecting Barella to stay there in the long-term.”

It’s not really clear if Liverpool really held any sort of interest in the Italian midfielder. In case they didn’t, they really should by now. The 24-year-old is a talented player who is slowly reaching his prime years. He could also be an apt signing to replace the industrious Gini Wijnaldum.
