Liverpool set to sign Real Betis’ Guido Rodriguez on the cheap

On Guido Rodriguez

Rodriguez is a product of River Plate’s academy. The midfielder played 16 games for the club. Between 2016- 2017, he went on to have spells at Defensa, CF America and Club Tijuana. He won the top-flight league with CF America.

Real Betis signed Guido Rodriguez in 2020. He has shown his full potential with the Spanish side. In his first full season, he made 35 appearances in the La Liga. He played an important role in helping Betis finish sixth in the league.

The 27-year-old continued his excellent year with the national team. He was a member of Argentina’s Copa America 2021 winning squad. Guido Rodriguez scored the only goal in the final of the tournament against Brazil.

Do Liverpool need Rodriguez?

Midfielder Gini Wijnaldum left the club this summer. However, the club still have decent squad depth in midfield. The current crop includes the likes of Fabinho, Thiago, Milner, Keita, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jones and Shaqiri.

But, a case for Rodriguez still could be made. Both Naby Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain have struggled with injuries.

Fabinho has been vital to the way Klopp likes to set up. Hence, a backup for the Brazilian could be essential. However, Rodriguez is 27. One would assume that a backup role might not satisfy him.

Nevertheless, a player like Rodriguez could certainly improve Liverpool.
