Phillipe Coutinho set for a Liverpool return

Sport Witness via Mundo Deportivo (h/t Liverpool Echo) suggests that Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho might be heading to Anfield. Barcelona will listen to offers for the 29-year-old. The Spanish club are also open to a loan deal.

The report states that Phillipe Coutinho is on Liverpool’s radar. However, the club are unlikely to pursue him unless they lose a major player themselves.

The Spanish outlet suggests that Liverpool are not only club in England keeping eyes on Coutinho. Tottenham Hotspur are another side interested. It adds that the North London club are actually the ‘main’ club for the player.

The Brazilian arguably played his best football during his time at Liverpool. Coutinho made 201 appearances for the Merseyside club, scoring 54 goals and 45 assists.

However, his tenure at Barca could be termed as underwhelming. The attacker has been in and out of the team, and has been unlucky with injuries. He was also sent on loan to Bayern Munich.

Do Liverpool need Coutinho?

Liverpool’s current midfield core includes Keita, Henderson, Thiago, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jones and Milner. Depth might not be an issue. However, that midfield has its limitations.

The likes of Oxlade-Chamberlain and Keita have struggled with injuries.

No second chances for Philippe Coutinho at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp.

Thiago, Jones and Milner aren’t the types who could contribute with goals from midfield. Hence, a case could be made for a goal-scoring midfielder like Coutinho.

Now, the question is if Coutinho broke any relationships by moving on from Liverpool in January 2018. His injuries could be another worry for the English club.
