Frank Lampard tips Liverpool to compete for the Premier League

Former Chelsea midfielder, manager and club legend Frank Lampard has given his opinion on how the 2021/22 Premier League season would go for Liverpool. According to him, the Reds are one of the contenders for the title. (h/t Liverpool Echo)

Lampard has had his fair share of problems with Liverpool during his time in the dugout with the Blues. The former Chelsea manager had a verbal faceoff with Jurgen Klopp in 2020. However, he had his pundit hat on this time.

The Chelsea legend was on media duties during the Community Shield. Speaking to the media (h/t Echo), Lampard was asked about teams who could compete with Manchester City and Chelsea. He included Manchester United and Liverpool in the contention.

“I think you can’t discount Manchester United. They were not far-off last year and have gone again and I think brought in really impressive signings. I think Liverpool will be the same”.

He went on to acknowledge the fact that injuries played a big factor for Liverpool last season. Lampard added that the Reds had been one of the best teams in Premier League history when they won the title in 2019/20.

“They missed huge players through injury for a big part of last season and the year before they were one of the best teams we’ve seen in the Premier League, so you definitely can’t discount those.”

Could Liverpool challenge for the title?

It would be unfair to rule Liverpool out due to last season. As said by Lampard himself, injuries ruined their ambitions. There was a point when Liverpool were tipped to not even make the top four. However, the club fought back to stay in the competition.

On the other hand, the club do seem like falling behind the likes of Manchester City, United and Chelsea in terms of transfers. The Liverpool board need to sort out Klopp’s requirements quickly or it could harm a potential title challenge.
