Trevor Sinclair thinks Liverpool could miss out on the top four

In his bit with talkSPORT (h/t Liverpool Echo), Trevor Sinclair gave his thoughts on how the 2021/22 Premier League season could go for Liverpool, casting doubts on their top-four credentials.

The former Manchester City forward made a bold prediction that the Reds could miss out on the top four, when asked for his prediction for the season. He highlighted the quality of midfield as an issue for the club, while also adding that Liverpool have failed to replace Georginio Wijnaldum.

“I know they’ve got Van Dijk back, but I’m a bit concerned for Liverpool. Just because they’ve not really invested any money especially in the midfield area. I think they’ve got some work to do before I start looking at them as being a real contender for the league.”

He said that while Virgil van Dijk is back, the player can’t play every game after coming off a knee injury.

“I’m just not sure they’ve got the depth. They can’t play Van Dijk every game. He’s is a top player but, coming back from a knee injury like he has, you’ve got to be really careful with him.

“You look at the captain Jordan Henderson and what’s going on with his contract, they’ve also lost Wijnaldum.”

Could the Reds miss out on top four?

So far, Liverpool have only signed Ibrahima Konate this summer. Their dull transfer business could cost their title ambitions. Other than that, the likes of Manchester City, United and Chelsea have made top-level signings.

However, it would be difficult to imagine the Reds missing out on the top-four finish. The club suffered from one of the worst injury crises last season and still finished third.

Furthermore, the Reds have an added advantage in Jurgen Klopp. The German has produced title-winning teams without spending much and knows how to get the job done.
