Liverpool stalwart Virgil van Dijk next in line for contract extension

Italian Journalist Fabrizio Romano via the Here We Go podcast (h/t Liverpool Echo) has provided an update on the contract situation of Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool.

According to the reliable journalist, many first-team players could expect a fresh deal at Anfield. However, as things stand, the Dutchman is next in line for a contract extension.

He will become the fourth Liverpool player to agree fresh terms this summer after Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho and Alisson Becker all signed new deals.

What does this mean for Liverpool?

Liverpool signed Van Dijk in January 2018 from Premier League rivals Southampton. He has since made a huge impact at the club. In many ways, he was the missing part in Jurgen Klopp’s super-team. The club have won the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League while Van Dijk was holding the defence.

However, he suffered from a nasty knee injury in October last year. The injury kept him out for the entire season, while he missed out on the UEFA Euro 2020 with the Netherlands as well. Nevertheless, Van Dijk is back training with the squad and featured in pre-season matches. The 30-year-old is expected to be fit for the start of the 2021/22 season.

Van Dijk is still 30 years old. As far as defenders go, he can still provide at least three-four more years of quality service. Securing him down to a new deal would thus be a huge boost for Liverpool, as he can continue to guide youngsters like Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate alongside him while marshaling the backline.
